My Song: Jean Paul Samputu on being Rwandan
Rwandan singer Jean Paul Samputu is a Tutsi who, in 1994, had to flee his country, where Tutsis (and moderate Hutus) fell victim to genocide committed by Hutus. Estimates of the death toll range from 500,000 to 1 million. After this horrific period in Rwandan history, Samputu returned to his country. His song 'Twararutashye' translates as 'We returned to our home'.
