'If you don't forgive, it will destroy you'

The hatred Jean Paul Samputu had for the neighbour who killed his parents and four of his siblings was eating him alive, so he forgave the man.

Samputu feels Montrealers can learn from his experience.

The Rwandan singer and peace activist, who will perform at the Tam Tam Jam on Mount Royal tomorrow to mark the International Day of Peace, eventually befriended the man who in 1994 murdered Samputu's father and mother, three of his brothers and a sister during the Rwandan genocide of minority Tutsis by majority Hutus. The United Nations estimates 800,000 people died.
